Finding work as a foreigner in Bali can be a little challenging, what with there being laws in place to protect the rights of the locals and to limit roles available to a foreigner who wishes to work and live in Bali.
Instead of applying for jobs, many foreigners in Bali opt to be business owners instead – this is possible with the Investor Visa, also known as the E28A, General Investment Visa.
Benefits Of The Investor KITAS
The Investor KITAS comes with a whole host of benefits, allowing foreigners in Bali to own and operate a business, stay long-term, and eventually apply for permanent residency, offering legal security and investment benefits. With the Investor KITAS, you can:
Own and operate a business in Indonesia under a PT PMA and have the right to manage your company.
Actively participate in the operations of your business without the need to apply for a separate work permit (IMTA), whereas other types of visas (e.g., tourist or social visas) do not permit this.
Stay in Indonesia for a longer period compared to a typical tourist visa or social cultural visa. It is usually valid for 1 year and can be renewed multiple times.
Own 100% of your company, provided the investment meets certain financial thresholds.
Have family members join you in Bali and Indonesia for the duration of your investor’s visa.
Enjoy access to local healthcare services, especially with the growing number of international hospitals in Bali.
Benefit from the local tax incentives and potentially be eligible for government programs that support investment in specific sectors.
Leave and re-enter Bali and Indonesia as often as you need to without losing your resident status.
Qualifying For An Investor KITAS
To qualify for an Investor KITAS as a foreigner in Bali, you will need to meet all of the following requirements:
Set up a PT PMA, a foreign investment company that must be established in Indonesia to qualify for an Investor KITAS.
Your company must be registered with the Indonesian Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM).
The company needs to meet the minimum capital requirements to qualify for foreign investment. Generally, the minimum investment for a PMA company is IDR 10 billion (around USD 650,000).
You must have at least one shareholder who is a foreigner and holds a significant stake in the company.
The minimum investment value for obtaining an Investor KITAS is usually IDR 10 billion (approx. USD 650,000) as an individual investor.
As the investor, you must hold a position as either the director or commissioner of the PMA company.
