Welcome to Bali! Your Smooth Arrival Guide

Ready for your trip to Bali? If this is your first time on the Island of the Gods, you’re probably wondering what to expect. To help you hit the ground running, here’s a friendly guide on what to expect when you land at Denpasar Airport. It’s usually a pretty smooth process, and knowing what’s coming will make it even easier.

1. Stepping Off the Plane at Bali Ngurah Rai International Airport

As soon as you exit the aircraft at Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport, you’ll be shuttled by airport bus to your designated gate. Then, just follow the signs to the arrivals area. The airport is manageable, but like any popular destination, it can get a bit bustling. Keep an eye out for the clear “Arrival” signs that will lead you to immigration.

2. A Quick Health Check (QR Code)

Before you can get to immigration, you’ll need to follow Indonesia’s current health protocols. This usually involves scanning a QR code to register your details. There are banners clearly displaying the QR codes placed around the arrival hall. You’ll use it to fill in any necessary health information, like your seat and flight number.

3. Visa on Arrival (VOA) or Pre-Arranged Visa

Next up is immigration. Most visitors will either get a Visa on Arrival (VOA) or already have a pre-arranged visa.

  • Visa on Arrival (VOA): If you need one, head to the VOA counters located right before immigration. You won’t miss it. It’s a straightforward process, usually costing around $35 USD for a 30-day visa (which can often be extended).
  • Other Visa Types: If you’re a customer of MPG Bali Visa, you’ll most probably already have the right visa ready. The following Bali visas are available for application if you’re looking to stay longer in Bali:
    • Investor Visa
    • Work Visa (KITAS)
    • Retirement Visa
    • Permanent Stay Visa (KITAP)
    • Multiple-Entry Visit Visa
    • Tourist Visa / Visa On Arrival
    • PT PMA Set Up
    • Consultancy services
    • More….

4. Smart Immigration with Autogates

If you have an e-passport, you might be able to use the autogates. These self-service gates can make clearing immigration much quicker!

How it works: You’ll scan your passport, stand for a facial recognition scan, and if all looks good, the gate opens for you. If you don’t have an e-passport, no worries – just head to the regular immigration counters.

5. Baggage Claim & Customs

Once you’ve completed immigration checks, follow the signs to baggage claim. The carousels are clearly marked with flight information.

Tip: Double-check the carousel number for your flight, as bags sometimes appear on different belts. There are plenty of porters offering their services for a small tip if you need help with luggage.

After you’ve got your bags, it’s time for customs. You’ll need to scan a “customs declaration QR code” and fill out the digital form. Show this at the customs counter right after baggage claims. Be prepared to be asked to go through a quick inspection.

6. Stepping Out of the Airport

You’ve cleared everything! Follow the “Exit” signs to reach the public arrival hall. There’s lots to see here – money exchange counters, taxi and tour services, mobile phone SIM cards, a kiosk selling ice cold drinks and sunscreens, and cafes offering coffee, pastries and burgers!

7. Stay Connected: SIM Card

These days, most travellers opt for e-SIMs which can be activated before you arrive. If you don’t have an e-SIM, the arrival hall at Ngurah Rai Airport has kiosks offering tourist prepaid SIM cards. Ensure your passport is available for registration, and consider pre-ordering online via Klook for added convenience.

Tip: Prices vary by data plan. A basic 10GB package for a short stay is usually around IDR 100,000 (about $7 USD). Remember to ask about the validity of your SIM card and internet package.

Find out how you can renew or reload your internet package yourself – the staff will be more than happy to show you how.

8. Connectivity: Staying Longer Than 90 Days

When you first buy a local SIM card, you’ll typically receive a free 90-day registration. However, if you plan to stay longer than 90 days, your SIM will stop working unless you complete a long-term registration process. This requires you to register your phone’s IMEI number and pay a tax of 30-40% on the value of your phone exceeding $500 USD.

Note that this registration only applies if you’re using a local phone number. Data-only eSIMs, on the other hand, are unaffected by this rule. Therefore, if you’re staying for more than three months, eSIMs are generally the best option to stay connected without the extra hassle.

9. Getting to Your Accommodation: Taxi or Grab

Getting from the airport to your hotel is simple with a couple of good options:

  • Official Taxis: Head to the official taxi counter inside the terminal. They offer fixed fares to your destination, so no need to worry about bargaining.
  • Grab: This is Bali’s popular ride-hailing service (similar to Uber). You’ll need to walk to the designated Grab pick-up point outside the terminal. It’s often a more affordable option, just make sure your Grab app is ready to go!
  • Trans Dewata Bus: Ideal if you’re staying in Kuta. Walk towards the domestic terminal and navigate towards the bus pick up point. Board the bus and scan to pay – the fare costs IDR 4,400 to Kuta.
