MPG Bali Visa is a leading Bali visa agent in Seminyak, Bali and one of the most common questions we receive from our customers is what is BPJS and how can I get BPJS as a foreigner in Bali?
The answer is fairly simple so let us explain it to you here.
What Is BPJS?
BPJS is a national healthcare and insurance policy created by the Indonesian government for the people of Bali and Indonesia. It is also available for:
KITAS holders: expats working in Indonesia for an Indonesian or Indonesian-registered company
KITAP holders: expats or foreigners who hold a Permanent Residence permit
Two Types of BPJS
There are two types of BPJS: BPJS Kesehatan (healthcare) and BPJS Ketenagakerjaan (Social Security).
If you’re working here in Indonesia, you will need to be registered for both types.
BPJS Kesehatan
Basic Healthcare: For basic healthcare services at participating clinics and dentists (outpatient treatments).
Advanced Healthcare: For serious health issues that cannot be resolved at outpatient clinics, where specialist doctors or in-patient care is needed.
Hospitalization: For patients who need to be hospitalized.
BPJS Ketenagakerjaan
Old Age Protection: Valid for those working 10 years or more for the same company.
Working Accident Protection: You will receive compensation for any accidents or injury inflicted during working hours.
In Case Of Death: Your family members or next-of-kin will receive compensation if you were to pass while working.
Pension: Only valid for Indonesian citizens.
Is BPJS Mandatory?
BPJS is mandatory for all Indonesians. It is also mandatory for working foreigners in Bali and expats living in Indonesia for longer than 6 months.
Foreigners in this context mean work KITAS holders and KITAP holders. Spouse KITAS holders are not eligible for BPJS.
Do note that for work KITAS holders, a valid and active BPJS is mandatory. Without a valid BPJS, you will not be able to extend your work KITAS.
Your BPJS will cover up to five of your family members as well. This means you the BPJS holder, your spouse, your children and step-children.
How Much Is BPJS?
Those working legally in Bali and in Indonesia will have their BPJS Kesehatan fee covered by the company that they’re working for.
Employer contribution rate is 4% of salary and employee contribution rate is 1% of salary every month.
If you’re an Indonesian Spouse KITAP holder, then you would most likely have to pay the BPJS Kesehatan fee yourself with rates as follows:
- Class 1 – IDR 150,000 per month
- Class 2 – IDR 100,000 per month
- Class 3 – IDR 42,000 per month
BPJS payment falls on the 10th of every month and on the following business day if the 10th falls on a weekend or public holiday.
