Moving to Bali With Your Family: What You Need to Know About Visas and Relocation

Thinking about moving to Bali with your family? It’s an exciting move, especially if you’re looking forward to a more relaxed lifestyle, beautiful surroundings and having your children grow up on the island.

Bali has plenty to offer families, from international schools and family-friendly neighbourhoods to a growing expat community. But before you start looking for a villa and deciding which school your children should attend, there’s one important thing you need to sort out: your visas.

Moving to Bali for a holiday is one thing. Moving here permanently with your family is another. You need to make sure everyone has the correct visa and stay permit, so you can settle into life in Indonesia without constantly worrying about visa extensions or having to leave the country.

So, what are your options when relocating to Bali with your family? And how does the Dependent KITAS work?

Let’s take a look.

What Is a Dependent KITAS?

If you’re moving to Bali with your family, one of the options worth looking into is a Dependent KITAS (Stay Permit).

Rather than having every family member apply for a completely separate visa, one parent holds the main stay permit and acts as the basis for the family’s applications. The spouse and dependent children can then apply for their own Dependent KITAS.

Here’s how it works:

  • The Primary Visa Holder: One parent first needs to secure an eligible main stay permit. This could be an Investor KITAS if they’re setting up a PT PMA company, a Working KITAS if they’re employed by an Indonesian company, or an eligible remote worker visa for those working with overseas income.
  • The Spouse and Children: Once the primary parent’s permit is approved, their spouse and dependent children under 18 can apply for a Dependent KITAS, subject to the relevant requirements.
  • Application Timing: It is important to coordinate the applications and prepare everyone’s documents in advance. This helps avoid unnecessary delays and ensures each family member has the correct immigration status when entering Indonesia.

Why Do Your Children Need the Right Stay Permit?

If you’re planning to raise your children in Bali, having the correct immigration documents is important for more than just staying in the country legally.

Here are a few things to consider.

School Registration

Bali has several international schools, and if you’re planning to enrol your children, you’ll need to check their immigration documentation requirements. Many schools will ask for a valid stay permit (KITAS) as part of the registration process.

Healthcare and Insurance

Moving to Bali also means thinking about your family’s healthcare needs. Having the appropriate residency documents can make it easier to arrange local services and explore health insurance options for your family.

Less Worry About Visa Extensions

If you’ve only ever visited Bali on a tourist visa or Visa on Arrival (VoA), you’ll know that you have to keep track of your permitted stay.

Doing this with an entire family can become quite a headache. A suitable KITAS gives your family a longer-term stay arrangement, so you don’t have to keep relying on short-term tourist visas and planning your life around their expiry dates.

What Documents Do You Need to Prepare?

Moving your family to another country involves quite a bit of paperwork, so it’s best to get everything organised before you start the application.

Depending on the type of visa and your family’s circumstances, you may need:

  • Valid passports for each family member.
  • Marriage certificate.
  • Birth certificates for dependent children.
  • Documents relating to the primary visa holder’s KITAS.
  • Proof of family relationship.
  • Other supporting documents required by Indonesian Immigration.

Some documents may also need to be translated, legalised or apostilled, depending on where they were issued.

Don’t leave everything until the last minute. Getting documents from your home country can take time, and missing paperwork can delay the entire application.
