Bali Immigration Update: In-Person Photo and Interview Now Mandatory

A new Bali immigration rule, effective from 29 May 2025, requires all foreigners in Bali to visit the Bali immigration office in person to complete their extension/stay requests or to renew their KITAS.

Applicants are required to visit the Bali immigration office on a stipulated date to have their picture taken and to attend an interview session. This will take place once the application/extension has been processed online.

This new rule impacts everyone in Bali, as per the Circular Letter No. IMI-417.GR.01.01 Year 2025, issued on May 15th by the Indonesian Directorate General of Immigration, and applies even if you’ve extended your visa or KITAS before without needing to appear in person.

What’s Changing

Here’s everything you need to know to prepare for upcoming changes when visiting Bali Immigration for visa and KITAS extensions:

In-Person Visit Requirement: All foreign nationals are now mandated to visit the Bali immigration office in person to complete their application.

After your online application/extension has been processed, you will need to:

  • Visit the Bali Immigration Office in person
  • Have your photo taken
  • Go through a brief interview
  • Wait while the visa approval process takes place

(Please note that approval can take up to 14 working days)

Impact on Visa Extensions: This means that even if you have a valid visa, you’ll need to physically attend the Bali immigration office to complete your extension request or to change status.

Impact on KITAS Renewal: Similarly, if you have a KITAS and need to renew it, you’ll need to attend the Bali immigration office in person to complete the renewal process.

When Does This Take Effect?

The new rule comes into force 14 days after the date of issuance, which means May 29, 2025.
