Bali is a magical island that has captured the hearts of millions. While it’s a place to relax, have fun, and unwind, it’s essential to remember that it’s also home to countless Balinese and Indonesian people.
Unfortunately of late, there has been shocking and distressing news about a small percentage of poor misconduct from some groups of visitors here in Bali which includes harassing and assaulting locals and disrespecting the local culture.
To help minimize any unpleasantness for all on the island, we’ve prepared a guide to respectful travel in Bali. Please take a look and remember – if you can’t behave a certain way in your home country, then you probably shouldn’t behave the same way while you’re in Bali!
Respect the Locals and Their Culture
Mind your manners: Never raise your voice, swear, or demand anything in an unpleasant or aggressive manner. The Balinese are known for their warmth and hospitality and have been welcoming foreigners to their island for decades. It’s crucial to reciprocate the generosity of the Balinese people in their own homeland.
Sacred spaces: Bali is deeply rooted in Hinduism. Temples and other sacred sites hold immense spiritual significance. Dress modestly and behave respectfully. Listen to your guide – he will take you to areas in the temple that are open to the public. Please note: Temples’ inner sanctums are off-limits except for worshippers coming to pray. Do not force or demand your way into these areas, expect serious consequences if you do.
Value your guide: Your guide is an expert on the island and deserves respect and appreciation beyond payments in cash. Listen to their instructions, follow their lead, and don’t be rude or demanding – remember that they’re taking you around their homeland. If you want to show your gratitude, you can always tip extra, or treat them to an ice-cold drink and other thoughtful gestures. Life in Bali can be demanding; guiding tourists is their livelihood, and it can be demanding work.
Public behavior: Be mindful of your actions in public. Avoid loud or disruptive behavior that might offend locals. Remember to queue up politely and avoid pushing or cutting in line, don’t touch anything or go anywhere that is off-limits. Don’t raise your voice, show aggression, or make demands just because you feel that you can pay for it.
Legalities and Public Safety Concerns
Treat your villa with care: Unfortunately, there have been instances of guests damaging or stealing from rental villas. This includes theft of artwork, gadgets, and electronics. Such behavior is illegal and disrespectful to the local community who invest significantly in these properties. Please treat your accommodation with care and leave it in the same condition as you found it.
Drive safely: Reckless driving, including going over the speed limit, and driving without a helmet, shirt, or license, has become a growing concern in Bali. Such behavior endangers both yourself and others. Please respect local traffic laws and drive responsibly.
Avoid illegal work: Working without proper permits is illegal and undermines the local workforce. You’re not only depriving the locals of job opportunities but also contributing to unfair labor practices.
Obey the law: Engaging in illegal activities, including prostitution, is both unethical and a crime.
Pay fairly: Respect fair prices for goods and services. Avoid aggressive haggling or underpaying. Bali offers exceptional value for food, souvenirs, and services compared to many Western countries. By paying fair prices, you directly support the local economy. Bali’s minimum wage is quite low (approximately USD 200 per month) – by spending within the community, you directly contribute to the livelihoods of locals but please do it with kindness, patience and understanding.
Experience Bali With Kindness & Understanding
Kindness and respect are universal values. It won’t do to compare Bali to where you come from. While economic conditions may vary globally, the warmth and hospitality of the Balinese people are unparalleled. Please appreciate their generosity and avoid taking advantage of their kindness.
Bali is a special place, and treating it with respect will ensure that everyone will get to experience its beauty and charm while we protect and respect the locals who are hard at work making this island one of the best holiday destinations in the world.
