Bali Visa Misuse: Indonesia Warns Influencers and Content Creators

It’s all over social media, and you’ve probably seen it too: Indonesian Immigration and authorities have reportedly issued fresh warnings to influencers, content creators, digital nomads, and foreign visitors over alleged Bali visa misuse.

The reports come amid increased immigration enforcement targeting foreigners suspected of conducting commercial activities without the appropriate visa or stay permit, namely those engaging in paid collaborations, barter agreements, and promotional activities while using tourist visas in Bali and across Indonesia.

What Is Indonesian Immigration Concerned About?

Recent international media coverage suggests Indonesian authorities are paying closer attention to activities that may provide “economic value,” even if no direct salary is involved.

This includes activities such as sponsored social media posts, influencer collaborations, barter deals with villas, hotels, cafés, and brands, commercial photography or videography, hosting workshops or retreats and promoting businesses or services online while in Indonesia.

If you’re unsure, the best thing to do is to check official channels. Indonesia’s official immigration website already clearly states that tourist and visit visas cannot be used for earning income or conducting commercial activities.

Official Indonesia Immigration Rules

According to the official Directorate General of Immigration website, Bali foreigners holding visit stay permits are prohibited from receiving compensation or engaging in work-related business activities in Indonesia.

This includes tourist visas, E-VOAs, business visas, social visas just to name a few. On the official B4 Visit Visa page, Immigration states:

“Foreign nationals holding this stay permit are prohibited from selling goods or services or receiving compensation, wages, or similar payment for work/business activities from individuals or corporations in Indonesia.”

This is one of the clearest official references supporting the recent enforcement trend being discussed online.

Bali Tourist Visas Are Intended for Tourism Activities

Indonesia’s visitor visas are generally intended for:

  • Tourism
  • Family visits
  • Social visits
  • Attending meetings or conferences
  • Limited non-income-generating business discussions

Indonesia Immigration also provides separate visa pathways for certain public performance or professional activities, demonstrating that commercial activities are treated differently from ordinary tourism.

What Does This Mean For Bali Influencers and Remote Workers

Over the past two years, Bali has seen a noticeable increase in immigration inspections and visa compliance checks involving foreigners.

Authorities are increasingly monitoring visa misuse, unauthorised work, business activities conducted under tourist visas, and online promotional activity linked to Indonesian businesses.

Bear in mind: Even when there is no direct monetary payment, barter arrangements or collaborations may still attract scrutiny from immigration authorities.

Potential consequences may include visa cancellation, deportation, fines, blacklisting from Indonesia and future visa complications.
