Getting married to an Indonesian citizen? Here is everything you need to know about the Spouse KITAS and all of the benefits that it brings. Read on to find out more.
What is a spouse KITAS and are you eligible?
A Spouse KITAS is a stay permit for foreigners who are legally married to an Indonesian citizen. The Spouse KITAS is valid for 1 year and must be renewed every year. It is extendable for up to 5 times – each time, you will get a 1 year stay permit.
After the fifth extension, the Spouse KITAS holder will have the option to apply for a permanent stay permit (KITAP) or apply for a new Spouse KITAS. You can also apply for a KITAP after 2 consecutive years of marriage.
Benefits Of A Spouse KITAS Holder?
With a Spouse KITAS, foreign citizens will be able to do the following:
- Obtain an Indonesian driver’s license
- Open a local bank account, apply for credit cards & loans in Indonesia
- Own local properties together with their spouse
Once the Spouse KITAS has been converted to a KITAP, the foreign citizen can then own an Indonesian ID card (KTP) with a validity of up to 5 years. They can also apply to become an Indonesian citizen.

Can You Work With A Spouse KITAS?
Spouse KITAS holders are not allowed to work in any Indonesian company or companies registered in Indonesia without a legal work permit, which is called an IMTA. To obtain an IMTA, you must first hold a KITAS – whether a Spouse KITAS, a Work KITAS or an Investor’s KITAS.
You cannot apply for an IMTA on your own – the company that you want to work with must handle the entire process on your behalf. The cost for an IMTA is USD 100 per person per month.
